Dubai launches smart camera trial to monitor public cleanliness
Real-time data to help authorities respond faster to violations
DUBAI – Dubai Municipality has initiated a pilot phase of a smart camera system under its “Smart Waste Management” framework, aiming to improve public cleanliness monitoring and speed up enforcement of violations.
The system leverages artificial intelligence and real-time data analysis to detect littering and other improper waste practices, enabling authorities to take swift corrective action.
Smart monitoring
The pilot involves installing smart cameras on select waste collection and transportation vehicles. These cameras capture images of streets, residential areas, and public spaces, highlighting littering, illegal dumping near waste containers, and improper disposal of bulky items. Captured data is analysed instantly and displayed on interactive digital dashboards for field teams to respond without delay.
Violations such as littering in public areas carry fines of up to Dh500. Other monitored behaviours include furniture or bulky waste dumped in non-designated areas, which can contribute to urban clutter and waste accumulation.
Data-driven oversight
Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said the initiative forms part of a broader strategic approach to enhance monitoring systems, support data-driven decisions, and develop sustainable policies to improve Dubai’s urban environment. The outcomes of the pilot phase will determine the system’s wider implementation.
Engineer Adel Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, explained that the technology accurately documents violations while protecting community privacy, aligning with Dubai’s broader smart city and digital transformation objectives.
Sustainability goals
The project supports the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, aimed at improving public cleanliness, quality of life, and environmental sustainability. By harnessing AI technology, Dubai Municipality seeks to reinforce the emirate’s global leadership in sustainable urban development and innovation.
